Ófærufoss

Ófærufoss

Ófærufoss is an extremely beautiful waterfall in the river Nyrðri-Ófæra and falls into Eldgjá in two cascades. There used to be a stone arch across the lower one up until the year 1993, when it fell into the river during spring thawing. From Northern Fjallabaksleið it is possible to drive into Eldgjá and walk from there to the Ófærufoss.

Systrafoss

Systrafoss in Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a waterfall where the river Fossá falls from the lake Systravatn into the gorge Fossárgil. Down in the gorge is a giant rock, Fossasteinn, that fell from the mountain in a massive thunderstorm in 1830.

Hólmsárfoss

Hólmsárfoss

Hólmsárfoss is in the Hólmsá River. The river runs into the border between the highland pastures of Skaftártunguafréttur and Álftaversafréttur. Opposite to the waterfall, residents from the Álftaver District built a shepherds’ mountain cabin, which is no small feat given that it is a two-story structure with horse stables on the lower level and sleeping quarters for 20 to 30 people on the upper level.

Fagrifoss, a waterfall in Geirlandsá River, is a magnificent waterfall that certainly lives up to its name. It´s on the way to Laki and the road is rugged with rivers that can be treacherous to cross if the water level rises due to lots of rain and warm weather. The view of the waterfall is best from the east side but a bit of a hike is necessary in order to get a good view

Foss á Síðu

Foss á Síðu

Foss á Síðu is a spectacular farm mound approx. 10 km east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. A beautiful waterfall falls from the cliffs above the farm, from a lake called Þórutjörn. This magnificent spectacle catches the eye of everyone that pass by. A passable hiking trail leads to Þórutjörn and from there the view of Síða is amazing. A short way from Foss á Síðu Dverghamrar lie. Dverghamrar are peculiar and beautiful formations of columnar basalt.

Stjórnarfoss

Stjórnarfoss is a small but picturesque waterfall next to an ancient site of the regional assembly, Kleifar. From Klaustur drive/walk Geirland Road F-203, 2 km.
